Type II Collagen (Chicken Cartilage)

RDA: Not Established
Researched Supplement Range: 80 mg to 480 mg
Average Daily Intake: Very Little if Any

Notes: Type II Collagen is molecularly different than the Type I collagen found in glucosamine sulfateand chondroitin sulfate

Type II Collagen naturally stabilizes the body's immune system and helps neutralize the production of abnormal molecular structures thought to be a major cause of joint misery and stiffness; especially in rheumatoid arthritis. It also provides the raw materials for human cartilage. For more detailed research on Type II Collagen see the Harvard Medical School Study (click here).

Ginkgo Biloba

RDA: Not Established
Researched Supplement Range: 60 mg to 240 mg
Average Daily Intake: Not readily available in foods

Ginkgo biloba is a powerful antioxidant herb that is best known for its ability to enhance circulation. In increases the oxygen supply to the heart, brain, and all other body parts. It is known as the "smart herb" because this increase in oxygen improves mental function. Ginkgo biloba also lowers blood pressure, inhibits blood clotting, and has anti-aging properties.

Gingko biloba studies have been especially promising in the area of senility, especially in reversing or delaying mental deterioration during the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Ginkgo biloba can decrease mental deterioration in Alzheimer's patients by stimulating normal brain function and by normalizing the acetylcholine receptors in the brain that are damaged by the disease.

In one study early-stage Alzheimer's patients and patients suffering from multi-infarct dementia were given either 240 mg of ginkgo biloba or a placebo. Both diseases responded well to the ginkgo biloba with significant improvements among patients. Another study of Alzheimer's patients given either 120 mg of ginkgo biloba or a placebo daily for a year showed significant improvements in mental function in 64% of the patients using ginkgo biloba. Ginkgo biloba is also useful in treating and reversing mental deficits that are due to vascular insufficiency or depression.

The above information is from research tests using Ginkgo biloba leaf extract standardized for 24 percent ginkgo flavone glycosides and 6 percent terpeniods. Cheap ginkgo biloba products not having these standardized levels would not be as effective. If it isn't stated on the product label don't assume the standardized levels are there.

*Note: Ginkgo biloba should be taken consistently for at least 12 weeks and preferably six months to achieve best results and to determine effectiveness. In order to maintain improvements, ginkgo must be taken indefinitely.

Glucosamine Sulfate

RDA: Not Established
Researched Supplement Range: 500 mg to 1,500 mg
Average Daily Intake: None--not available in foods

Notes: N-acetyl-glucosamine (NAG) and glucosamine hydrochloride are other forms of glucosamine that are marketed as better absorbed. This is not supported in scientific studies in fact studies show a lower level of absorption and joint improvement for those forms of glucosamine; and yet they cost more--BUYER BEWARE.

Aging results in insufficient body manufacturing of glucosamine and loss of joint cartilage. This manufacturing decline is likely a result of years of deficiencies that have damaged body production ability and/or decreases in digestive system function and nutrient absorption.

Supplemental glucosamine sulfate is made from specially processed exoskeletons from seafood (i.e. shrimp, crab).

Supplemental glucosamine sulfate is made from specially processed exoskeletons from seafood (i.e. shrimp, crab). Many rigorous medical studies have been performed on glucosamine sulfate. In one clinical study medical doctors reported a therapeutic benefit ranging from "sufficient to good" in 95% of the 1,500 plus patients. Significantly better clinical success than the doctors had previously found with NSAID drugs, vitamin therapies, and other cartilage supplements.

Glucosamine Sulfate has proven more bioavailable than gelatin, chondroitin sulfate, and shark cartilage (Shark cartilage is not recommended for arthritis use).

Confusion often arises from those who are allergic to "sulfa." Allergies to sulfa drugs and sulfite-containing food additives are not applicable to the mineral sulfur. Sulfur is an essential mineral for the body to function and is not toxic to the body. Glucosamine sulfate has had no reported allergic reactions.

Melatonin

RDA: Not Established
Researched Supplement Range: 3 mg at bedtime, dosages as low as 0.1 mg and 0.3 mg can produce a sedative effect when melatonin levels are low
Average Daily Intake: None--not available in foods

Melatonin (not to be confused with melanin which is responsible for skin pigmentation) is a hormone manufactured from seratonin and secreted by the pineal gland. This hormone plays an essential role in regulating the secretion of certain hormones. It is also responsible for controlling periods of sleepiness and wakefulness. Melatonin secretion is stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light. Melatonin also works as a powerful free radical scavenger which, unlike other antioxidants, can work in any cell in any part of the body.

Melatonin has been used in the treatment of jet lag, insomnia, cancer, depression, multiple sclerosis, and coronary artery disease.

Chondroitin Sulfate

RDA: Not Established
Researched Supplement Range: 500 mg to 1,500 mg
Average Daily Intake: Very Little

Notes: Sea Cucumber is a good source of chondroitin sulfate and several other joint friendly nutrients.

Chondroitin is made up of sugar molecules linked with repeating glucosamine molecules. This complexity makes the documented absorption rate much lower than for glucosamine; and some experts therefore recommend taking only glucosamine.

However, for thousands of years sea cucumbers have been used successfully in China for treating arthritis. Plus, the concept of broad nutrient coverage for the body to work with many absorption options would indicate that a combination of several joint friendly nutrients is more optimal than just one nutrient.

Shark Cartilage

RDA: Not Established
Researched Supplement Range: 1,000 mg 50,000 mg
Average Daily Intake: Unavailable

Notes: Should not be used by pregnant women or children, or persons who have had recent surgery, suffered a heart attack, or have a danger of stroke or any other vascular condition.

Shark Cartilage has an angiogenesis inhibition effect, meaning it suppresses new blood vessel development and shrinks existing blood vessels.Shark Cartilage has an angiogenesis inhibition effect, meaning it suppresses new blood vessel development and shrinks existing blood vessels. This effect could worsen heart, brain, or kidney vascular diseases. Although shark cartilage is known to be used for arthritis it appears to be an unwise choice, since an arthritis supplement program needs enhanced blood flow for the joint to receive nutrients and make repairs.

Cancerous tumor often grow because they stimulate the body to get them nutrients through new networks of blood vessels. It is easy to see that shark cartilage is a valuable advocate for fighting the growth of cancerous tumors; and studies document that shark cartilage has been effective in shrinking cancerous tumors. Shark cartilage also stimulates the immune system. It has been used successfully for macular degeneration, inflammation of the bowel lining, and diabetic retinopathy.

Gelatin

RDA: Not Established
Researched Supplement Range: 500 mg to 1,500 mg
Average Daily Intake: 0 (not available in foods)

Notes: May cause bloating and burping in those whose digestive acids are inadequate.

Bovine gelatin (animal source gelatin) is one source of raw cartilage, but probably the most difficult for the body to digest and assimilate. Especially by the elderly, who usually have inefficient digestive acids and compromised digestion. The good side of gelatin is usually its cost. In general it is more economical per capsule than any of the other cartilage options, and for some individuals it provides satisfactory results. This is especially so in a younger individual with early signs of arthritis.
