Deficiency Linked to Infertility: Structure of Maturing Sperm Effected

Researchers reporting in the journal Science have shown that a protein containing selenium prevents sperm from breaking down. This may be why a deficiency in selenium has been linked to male infertility in animals, and possibly in humans. Selenium deficiency is rare in humans, since it is found in meat, seafood, liver and grains, but when animals are fed diets that are deficient in selenium, the animals produce defective sperm. Researchers found that as sperm mature, the protein containing selenium is responsible for maintaining their structure.
